Rana for providing safe drinking water in rural areas on priority

NAGROTA, Feb 21: Member Legislative Assembly Devender Singh Rana today stressed the crucial need of providing safe drinking water in rural habitations in a time bound manner, saying contamination is an issue that affects huge population, leaving them, especially children, vulnerable to illness.
“To achieve the objective of providing piped water to rural households, synergized efforts are needed to be taken with active involvement of village communities”, Rana said while inaugurating an Exhibition-cum-Mela followed by Constituency Level Advocacy Workshop on Water Sanitation at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Nagrota.
The Mela and the Workshop, sponsored by Communication and Capacity Development Unit Department of PHE, I & FC, was organized by National Development Foundation.
Additional District Development Commissioner, Jammu Suriya Jabeen was guest of honour on the occasion.
Rana, who was the chief guest, underlined the need of safe drinking water for rural populace and hoped that the line departments would redouble their efforts to ensure expeditious implementation of the programme. He also asked the PHE Department to check the water quality of all hand pumps and other water resources in Nagrota Assembly constituency and submit a report to him by March 31, 2018. He asked the allied departments to work in an integrated manner so that benefits of centrally sponsored schemes reach people without delay.
The MLA called upon the people to avail the benefits of schemes tailored for their welfare and urged the concerned agencies to generate awareness among the masses. He further appealed to the participants to take care of all the water resources in their areas and ensure their safety.
Rajiv Khajuria Founder Emeritus, NDF, presented a detailed key-note address, covering various aspects of water, sanitation, water conservation and Village Water Security Plan.
Er. Gopal Sharma from CCDU presented welcome address while vote of thanks was presented by Er. Rajesh Gupta, Executive Engineer PHE (Rural) Jammu. Pardeep Khanna conducted the proceedings.
Around 500 people participated in the Advocacy Workshop and also attended Exhibition Cum Mela.
Later, Rana announced a bus and a hand pump for Girls Higher Secondary School Nagrota and sanctioned Rs 20,000 for the picnic of school children to Surinsar.
