JAMMU, Oct 6: Ramban police today arrested a Hizbul Mujahideen militant from Anantnag district of South Kashmir, who had given weapon to three ultras of Banihal for carrying out terror attack on SSB camp at Thathar, Banihal in which a jawan was martyred and another injured. Security forces also recovered a grenade on the basis of interrogation of three militants.
SSP Ramban Mohan Lal told the Excelsior that a Hizbul Mujahideen militant Nazir Ahmad S/o Abdul Ahad Malik a resident of Verinag was arrested by Banihal police today from a hideout at Dooru in Anantnag district and was brought to Banihal for sustained interrogation.
Name of Nazir Ahmad had figured in September 20 terror attack on SSB camp at Thathar Banihal during interrogation of three local militants of Banihal, who were arrested within a day of the terror attack along with two weapons, which they had snatched from the SSB jawans after firing at them including one INSAS and one AR-91 rifle and a pistol, which they had used in the firing.
Police said they had developed reports that Nazir Ahmad had arranged pistol for three militants of Banihal for carrying out attack on the SSB camp. Nazir was arrested today by a Banihal police team with the help of their South Kashmir counterparts.
He was being questioned in Banihal.
Meanwhile, police today recovered a grenade from Kaskoot forests in Banihal. Three arrested militants during their questioning at the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC), Jammu had disclosed that they had dumped a grenade in Kaskoot forests of Banihal for using it later.
The live grenade has been seized, police said, adding that police parties led by SDPO Banihal Dheeraj Singh Katoch made the recovery.
Three militants of Banihal—Gazanfar Iqbal Khan, Mohammad Arif and Aqib Wahid had been arrested by police within a day of the terror attack.
