SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, Jan 23: With rain and fresh snowfall in most of the parts in J&K, there has been sharp fall of 7 degrees Celsius in the temperature in Jammu today while three persons including a couple died after their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Kapran area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district due to slippery road conditions caused by light snowfall in the hills.
Official sources said that the Omni Van bearing Registration No. JK03E/ 1002 rolled down into a gorge near Khadar area of Kapran,  Verinag after it skidded off  the road due to slippery road conditions caused by fresh snowfall in the area and led to death of three persons.
The dead include driver, identified as Mohammad Yousuf, 35,  son of Kaloo Gujar and the couple,   Mohammad Din Gojar, 55, son of Ahmad Din and Hajra Begum, 50, wife of Mohammad Din. All the three were residents of Ringmandoo, Kapran  in district Anantnag.   They were travelling to Ringmandoo from Kapran when it was snowing in the area and road was slippery, the sources said.
The hills in Kashmir had light snowfall today with overcast condition in the Valley.  The snowfall led to drop in the day temperatures with chilly winds blowing across forcing people to remain mostly indoors. The MeT department has forecast rain and snowfall at isolated placed in next 24 hours.

Kargil town continued to shiver as the mercury there settled at a low of minus 19.2 degrees Celsius last night, slightly down from minus 18.8 degrees  from the previous night. He said Kargil continued to be the coldest recorded place in the State. The day temperature dropped to minus 2. 0 degrees Celsius.
Leh town was the second coldest as the mercury there settled at minus 14 degrees Celsius marginally up from minus 14.3 degrees Celsius of previous night. The day temperature dropped to 0.4 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.7 degrees Celsius last night marginally up from minus 4.4 degrees Celsius of the previous night. The day temperature dropped to 7.1 degrees Celsius.
The night temperature in Qazigund, in South Kashmir, settled at a low of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, while the neighbouring Kokernag town registered a low of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius last night. The day temperature dropped to 6.0 degrees Celsius. Kupwara in North Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius slightly up from the previous night’s minus 4.9 degrees Celsius. The day temperature dropped to 10.0 degrees Celsius.
The night temperature in Pahalgam settled at a low of minus 5 degrees Celsius compared to the low of minus 5.7 degrees Celsius the previous night. The day temperature dropped to 7.4 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, a slight decrease from yesterday’s minus 4.5 degrees Celsius. The day temperature dropped to 8.2 degrees Celsius.
The winter capital city- Jammu, has shown sharp fall  in day’s temperature ( nearly 7 degree Celsius) while rain throughout the day threw normal life out of gear. The entire region has been under the grip of cold wave while water logging in many city roads has affected the smooth movement of traffic. Most of the people stayed indoors due to rains today and there was less rush in the markets as well and poor attendance in schools and offices.
Mata Vaishno Devi Hills, Patnitop  and Nathatop besides hilly areas of  Latti, Dudu-Basantgarh, Bhaderwah, Bani, Doda, Kishtwar, Mahore-Gool and Poonch- Rajouri experienced fresh snowfall of  this year. Inspite of rain and snowfall at Bhawan of Mata Vaishno Devi, the movement of pilgrims remained smooth. Three to four inches snow was recorded at Vaishno Devi.
The Helicopter service to Bhawan from Katra base camp  remained suspended due to bad weather. The battery car operation also remained suspended.
A MeT spokesman said that Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 13.5 degree C while it was recorded  as 21.4 degree C on Monday.  A day earlier, it was 21.8 degree C. A sharp fall of nearly 7 degree C has been recorded in just past 24 hours.  The minimum temperature of Jammu has gone nearly 7 degree C today.
Holy township of Katra today recorded a minimum temperature of  6.7 degrees C and maximum 12.6 degrees C;  Tourist resort Bhaderwah a maximum 8.8 degrees C and minimum 1.2 degree C while Batote maximum 8.2 degrees C and minimum 2.7 degrees C temperature. Jammu city recorded a rainfall of 9.8 mm till 5.30 pm today.
A senior Traffic Police official said that despite rain and light snowfall in Patnitop  and Pir Panjal area this afternoon, the movement of traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was smooth. He said there was slippery road conditions but the road was operational. He said there was light rain in Ramban belt and there was no report of any land slide or disruption on highway.  Batote-Doda-Kishtwar and Doda-Bhaderwah roads were   also clear for the vehicular movement.
