Protests in Srinagar over flood relief

Srinagar, Oct 1: Protests rocked Srinagar at several places today as flood victims blocked roads including National Highway alleging irregularities in relief distribution and Government’s failure to provide any succor to them ahead of winter.
Residents of Shalteng, Parimpora and Batamaloo blocked the Srinagar-Baramulla Highway at several places to protest against alleged bungling in distribution of relief material and Government’s failure to de-water inundated areas and provide any shelter to them.
“We are told tonnes of relief material have been distributed among the flood victims. We have not seen anyone here distributing any material. Where is relief going,” said Nazir Ahmad of Shalteng.
The protestors were also alleging that Government has failed in restoration of electricity and water supply to their areas even after flood water receded more than a week ago. “Why has the Government forgotten these areas? We also need these amenities to restart our lives,” said a protestor.
Residents from Batamaloo and adjoining areas staged a sit-in protest and blocked the road near Civil Secretariat in the morning.
The blockade of the Srinagar-Baramulla road has snapped traffic movement between central Kashmir with North Kashmir. Srinagar city also witnessed huge traffic jams.
