Protests over playground encroachment

Srinagar, Jan 18: Dozens of sports lovers from Chadoora area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district staged protests against the Government for permitting a local contractor to raise a school building in the only play field of their area.
The protesters said the ground was the only playing field for around 100 villages of Budgam and nearby villages of Pulwama district.
“Due to illegal encroachment and allowing wary construction the youth would lose their play field. The youth from more than 100 villages play cricket here but unfortunately we don’t know why Government permitted contractors for constructing school building in the field,” Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh, President Youth Body Surasyar, said.
He said some vested interested contractors and Panchs with political influence have sent a “fake resolution” to the concerned Government officials for the construction of school building inside cricket ground.
The protesting youth said they would oppose construction in the ground and are ready to fight against it if Government failed to stop work there.
“We approached district sports authorities and Chief Education Officer and registered our genuine complaint and despite their assurance the contractor didn’t stop his work,” Feroz Ahmad, Secretary Youth Body Surasyar, said.
Holding placards and banners, the protesting youth appealed the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, Sports Minister and the local MLA to look into the issue personally to stop construction works in the ground.
