JAMMU, Feb 16: Alleging unnecessary harassment by the Director of Department of Sports and Physical Education in Jammu University, students of Physical Education held a strong protest demonstration on the campus, here today.
The protesting students of MPEd and BPEd raised slogans against the Director and demanded his shifting from the department. They also staged a dharna in front of the JU main gate.

Later, the students marched towards Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat in the afternoon and locked it.   Vice Chancellor and other staff working in the Secretariat remained struck for around five hours as the students locked both gates of the Secretariat.
Highlighting their grievances, one of the student of Sports and Physical Education, alleged that students were being harassed without any reason and Director Avtar Singh Jasrotia was running the department on his whims and fancies, instead of the statues mentioned.
She added that the examinations were not being conducted as per direction by the varsity calendar, which was indirectly affecting academic performance of the students.
Another student from the department said that the Director was not accepting medical certificate, issued by the Medical Officer and had been marking the students absent with the result that they were not eligible in appearing final examinations which, was totally against the rules and statues of the university.
She added that nobody is allowed to participate in the national tournaments during the BPEd and MPEd courses.
“Varsity authorities are calling in our homes and telling our parents that their wards are protesting instead of attending the classes. We are not happy to protest, but we have been forced to protest”, she stated.
She urged to Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of the University to intervene into the matter and do justice with them.
The protesters said that they met Vice Chancellor several times and apprised him about the issued being faced by them.
“VC constituted a committee to enquire allegations leveled by students on Director, but its outcome is not in favour of the students. Our demand is to shift the Director, otherwise we will protest in more aggressive manner and for any untoward incident, the varsity authorities will be responsible”, he added.
However, the students in the evening blocked the road at the main gate of the Jammu University by burning the tyres and disrupted the traffic movement. They continued their protest, when last reports were compiled.
