JAMMU, Apr 1: The unruly scenes and protests by paramedical employees were witnessed today in Indira Gandhi Government Dental College, Jammu due to alleged burning of Tri-colour by a student of the college late last night after India was knocked out of ICC World Twenty20 following seven-wicket defeat.
According to the official sources, a large number of students of Dental College and some faculty members were watching the India-West Indies semi-final match of T-20 World Cup on a big screen in college auditorium last night after getting permission of the college authorities when one of the students identified as Inzam-ul-Haq of Rajouri allegedly torched National flag and raised anti-National slogans to celebrate India’s defeat in the match.
Sources said that this led to minor scuffle between the accused student and others who warmed him of doing so but the situation was controlled timely after intervention of faculty members.
But, as soon as the college opened this morning and the news about the alleged act spread in the campus, paramedical staff of the college under the leadership of their president Pradeep Sharma today suspended all type of work in the college and held a strong protest against the incident.
Later, they were joined by activists of Bajrang Dal and civil people from the locality demanding the Principal of the College to rusticate the accused student both from college and hostel and register a formal complaint in this regard with the police.
Meanwhile, senior officers of the police including SDPO and SHO Pacca Danga, also reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesting people including hospital staff but all in vain.
Later in the evening, succumbing to the pressure created by the protesting staff and other people, Principal, Dr Ramesh Singh, rusticated the accused student from hostel and forwarded a complaint against the accused to the police.
When contacted, College Principal confirmed that they have rusticated the accused student from the hostel and forwarded a complaint against the accused to the police. He further disclosed that the accused student was earlier also rusticated from the hostel in 2009-10 for his indiscipline.
SDPO City North, Vivek Shekhar Sharma, when contacted, confirmed that an FIR against the accused student has been registered at police station Pacca Danga and further investigations are on.
