JAMMU, Jan 29: Lack of education by women has a negative impact on the health and well-being of their children. This was observed by BJP State general secretary and MLA from Gandhi Nagar constituency, Kavinder Gupta while addressing people of his constituency at Gangyal and Jeevan Nagar today.
He said illiterate women have high levels of fertility and mortality, poor nutritional status, low earning potential, and little autonomy within the household. Expressing serious concern over dropout of girl children in rural areas, Gupta said that there is an urgent need to launch massive awareness programmes in rural areas to motivate parents to send their girls to schools and also to motivate them for treating both boys and girls equally with regard to education and other fields also.
He said girls are often taken out of school to share the family responsibilities such as caring for younger siblings, which is really very unfortunate. Gupta expressing surprise over discrimination even in this competitive and well advanced era of science and technology said that if a family has to choose between educating a son or a daughter because of financial restrictions, typically the son will be chosen.
He said negative parental attitudes towards educating daughters can also be a barrier to a girl’s education. Many parents view educating sons as an investment because the sons will be responsible for caring for aging parents. On the other hand, parents may see the education of daughters a waste of money as daughters will eventually live with their husbands’ families, and the parents will not benefit directly from their education, Gupta lamented. Vikram Randhawa, Baldev Billoria, Vinay Gupta, Jaideep Sharma, Ch. Harbans, Bindu Bali, Satpal Chowdhary, Sharda Devi, Shah Bano, Cpt (retd) . Kehar Singh were prominent among others were present.
