Program on secondary segregation of solid waste launched

LEH, Dec 13: On an initiative taken by District Administration and supported by Hill Council, a program on secondary segregation of solid waste was launched today in Solar Colony, Choglamsar by Rural Development Department, Leh.
CEC LAHDC Dr  Sonam Dawa Lonpo, DC Leh Avny Lav-asa, EC (Agri) Tsering Angdus, EC (Works) Dorjey Mutup, EC (A&SH) Mumtaz Hussain, ADC Leh Moses Kunzang, Councilor Pheyang Phuntsog Dorje, ACD Leh Tsering Paldan, CEO, LDA Zahida Bano were present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, CEC said that with the solid waste management program starting in their area, people of Choglamsar should set an example of how to keep area and houses clean and become messengers to spread awareness on cleanliness in every village of Leh district. He appealed the people of Choglamsar to take the cleanliness program seriously and support RDD in making the initiative successful and set a model for others to follow.
DC, Leh, speaking on the occasion, said that this program is a solution to our problem of waste management. She added that its result and benefit depend on the residents of the area and based on the success of this project in Choglamsar, similar centre would be opened in other villages of the district. She said that this initiative is easy to implement and modifications will be done based on public response. Avny said that basis of the project is to find possibilities to re-use the waste generated and also to supply it for recycle to organisations like PAGIR.
For segregation of waste, a group of women from Solar Colony has volunteered. They were given training by RDD recently. CEC praised the woman group for volunteering for good cause and said that they are inspiring and setting example for others to contribute towards keeping society and environment clean. He directed ACD, Leh to provide them with heating and other facilities and appreciated the DC for involving locals in this project.
Later, CEC distributed blue and green coloured dustbins to the residents and shopkeepers of Choglamsar. He urged them to make proper use of these dustbins to segregate organic and inorganic waste. A short video on awareness on solid waste management was also shown.
