JAMMU, Sept 25: In a bid to reduce the burden of Cardio Vascular Diseases among the general population, Dr.Sushil Sharma (HoD, Department of Cardiology, GMC Jammu) today held a day long health awareness camp in SOS village Home , Gole Gujral.
He and his team looked at the tender buds with care and advised them to follow healthy lifestyle in order to delay the onset of any ailment. Around 250 people including inhabitants residing in the adjoining area were diagnosed, evaluated and advised during the camp. While interacting with the inmates of the home, Dr. Sushil asserted that the Coronary artery disease begins in childhood. It is a common term for the build up plaques. With coronary artery disease, plaque first grows within the walls of the coronary arteries until the blood flow to the heart’s muscle is limited.
“This results in  ischemia. It may be chronic, narrowing of the coronary artery over time and limiting of the blood supply to part of the muscle. Or it can be acute, resulting from a sudden rupture of a plaque and formation of a thrombus or blood clot,” he added.
Dr. Sushil highlighted the traditional risk factors for coronary artery disease like Smoking in younger generation, high LDL cholesterol, low  HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, physical inactivity  obesity and stress. He further enlightened the children that coronary artery disease is preventable if precautions are taken at the appropriate time Typical warning signs such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations and even fatigue.
