PULWAMA : Polling for Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in Jammu and Kashmir began today amidst apprehension of low voter turnout due to killing of four political workers in a week’s time and incidents of stone pelting on some polling booths.
There was no voter at polling stations in Kakapora and Pampore in Pulwama district, which is part of the Anantnag constituency, at 7.00 AM.
They attributed the lack of enthusiasm to killing of three political workers in Tral area of Pulwama on Monday night. Police sources said miscreants indulged in stone pelting on polling booths at Tral, Pulwama, Qoimoh and some other places last night.
No one was hurt in the incidents, the officials said, but maintained that these affect the voter turnout.
Voting, however, in the other parts of the constituency has picked up as voters have started turning out in large number, officials said.
Although 12 candidates are in the fray for this Lok Sabha seat spread over 16 assembly segments in four districts, the contest is expected to be a direct fight between ruling National Conference candidate Mehboob Beg and opposition PDP president Mehbooba Mufti.
Of the 16 assembly segments, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLAs represent 12, the Congress two and the National Conference (NC) and the CPI-M one each. (AGENCIES)
