LEH, Oct 3: Women activists of religious, political and social organizations alleged that police in Leh is shielding the accused, who allegedly eve-teased a girl in Leh two days back.
Addressing a press conference, women leaders informed that the incident reportedly took place on September 30 this year around 5:45 pm with a girl who was walking in the Leh Market near SBI.
“The girl was harassed and insulted by two individuals by passing unwanted comments and obscene remarks in the public place”, Nominated Councillor of PDP Rinchen Lhamo alleged.
She added that some people who saw this happening couldn’t bear the insults to the girls and intervened to protect the dignity of the girl, adding that the police refused a lodge an FIR into the case when the girl went Police Station Leh but two persons who protected the girl have been booked under non-bailable sections because those who allegedly eve-teased the girls turned out to be police personnel in civil dresses.
“Instead of maintaining law and order in this peace loving border region, police is misusing its authority which could potentially lead to destabilize the harmony in the region,”, said Lhamo while reading a joint letter by the women leaders addressed to the Governor.
The letter has been signed by women leaders from Ladakh Buddhist Association’s Women’s Wing, Anjuman Moin-Ul-Islam’s Women Wing, Ajuman Immmia’s Women Wing, Christian Association’s Women Wing, Ladakh Women Alliance Leh, Mahela Mandel Leh, Ladakh Women’s Welfare Network, BJP Women Wing Leh, Congress Women Women Wing Leh, PDP Women Wing Leh and NC Women Wing Leh.
Lhamo demanded impartial enquiry into the whole episode and exemplary punishment to persons involved this act of crime against women.
Responding to media query into the case, SSP Leh Sargun Shukla said that police is not in a position to make any comment at this stage as the case is under investigation. She assured of strict punishment to the persons, who will be found involved in the case.
