JAMMU, Aug 22: Police today foiled an attempt of self-immolation by the agitating Contractual Lecturers, who are on chain hunger strike for the last 190 days demanding their regularization.
Amidst raising of slogans in support of their demand during the protest demonstration near Press Club Jammu, one of the agitating Contractual Lecturers poured kerosene oil on his body and attempted to set himself on fire.
However, timely action by the Police personnel on the spot foiled the attempt. Police also whisked away the youth attempting suicide, who was identified as Narinder Bhardwaj.  However, he was released later on from Nawabad Police Station.
The trouble erupted when the agitating Contractual Lecturers marched from the venue of hunger strike towards the Dogra Chowk. Even as Police tried to stop them at the Exhibition Ground, the protesters managed to reach near the Press Club and held a demonstration there.
As one of the protesters tried to attempt self-immolation, Police intervened and dispersed the Contractual Lecturers by force. The Contractual Lecturer, who attempted self immolation, was also taken into custody and whisked away Nawabad Police Station where he was released later on.
Earlier, the protest demonstration was addressed by Arun Bakhshi,  State president of the Contractual Lecturers Association. He accused the State Government of trying to snub their agitation by way of issuing new fresh notification through CEOs on the basis of the fake order which are no where in existence (G.O.No. 816 of 1998 and Order No. 1345 of 1998 modified by Govt  Order No. 1301 of 2003, further modified by 1584 of 2003). “Now Contractual rules ( SRO 255) are in existence. So  all these notifications are fake because as per Civil Services Special Provision Act.2010, there is restrictions/ ban on any type of Ad-hoc / Contractual / consolidated / Temporary appointment,” he explained.
Those who began their chain hunger strike today, included  Ranjan Bala, Kanchan Bala, Balvinder Kour, Neelam Sharma, Kiran Bala, Shilpa Raina, Anju Bala, Sanita Koul, Richa Maini, Arun Bakhshi, Rakesh Khajuria, Ishan Maini, Mohd.
