Srinagar, Oct 4: Police today foiled a joint protest march of transporters and traders against shifting of General Bus Stand Batamaloo.
Scores of traders, transporters and street vendors of Batamaloo assembled at press enclave in Lal Chowk and staged a protest against the shifting of General Bus Stand to Parimpora. The protesters were carrying placards and banners and were shouting slogans like ‘we want justice’.
The protesting traders and transporters later tried to march towards Civil Secretariat but were intercepted by police near Clock Tower in Lal Chowk and cane-charged. The police flexed muscles on the protesters and prevented them from moving towards Civil Secretariat. Due to protest, the vehicular movement in city centre was affected for sometime.
The protesting traders and transporters while reiterating to their opposition of shifting General Bus Stand to Parimpora on city outskirts urged the Government to construct a road through Tatto Ground to prevent traffic congestion. They said that the Government should take steps in this regard and ask army to vacate the Tatto Ground which spans from Batamaloo to Bemina.
