Police cracks down on sand mafia

Srinagar, Apr 29: Police in Rafiabad area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla districts have launched a crackdown against the sand mafia and seized several trucks employed in illegal ferrying of the sand.Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rafiabad, Shabir Khan, said they were getting complaints from locals of Sain Saidnar, Rohama, and Warpura regarding the illegal excavation of sand.
“Locals of these areas are worried about landslides due to unnecessary excavation of sand. Moreover these sand mafias don’t have any permission from concerned authorities,” he said, adding that in this regard prompt action was taken and several trucks were seized by police.
He said police have constituted a special team in keeping check on the illegal excavation and said the drive against the sand mafia will continue.
