JAMMU, Mar 1: National Mazdoor Conference (NMC) has urged upon the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare ‘May Day’ as a Gazette holiday throughout the country under Negotiable Instrument Act as a befitting tribute to May Day martyrs.
In a memorandum sent to Narendra Modi, NMC president, Subhash Shastri, said that because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got their rights throughout the world and India being the largest and most vibrant democracy across the globe and frontline welfare State should declare May 1 as Gazette holiday.
He said that this will be a great gesture, as it will recognize the valuable contribution of the working class in all round development of the Country and fulfill the most genuine and long pending demands of the working class.
Reminding that the then Government led by VP Singh had declared May Day as a Gazette holiday in the Country in 1990, Shastri asked why it was not done thereafter.
