JAMMU, Mar 30: The Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Nirmal singh today said that several initiatives are being taken both at the central and state level in order to ensure that the sports sector gets the requisite fillip and up-gradation of the infrastructure is also ensured.
The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking at the concluding function of District Level Sports Competition organized by the Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council under Khelo India initiative.
Legislature Rajesh Gupta, Secretary Youth Services and Sports, Hilal Paray, Additional Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh, Senior Officers of Sports Council, members of sports council, sportspersons and people from different walks of life were present in the function.
While terming the Khelo India initiative undertaken by the Prime Minister Narinder Modi as a game changer in ensuring that the sportspersons get the requisite and necessary facilities, the Deputy Chief Minister said that we have to ensure the success of it. He said that by doing so we would be ensuring the proper honing of sports talent besides providing the requisite opportunities to the aspiring ones.
Dr Singh said that sports activities contribute in shaping the overall persona of young people by proper channelization of their energies. He said that it can also play a vital role in taking them away from the drug menace which is threatening to destroy our future generation.
Dr Singh further said that the initiative has helped youth in general and rural youth in particular to showcase their talent and skill at the higher levels.
Legislature Rajesh Gupta also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the various initiatives being undertaken in the sports sectors. He said that in recent past several national and international tournaments have been organized in the state which has contributed immensely in giving the requisite exposure to the budding talent.
Earlier, Vice Chairman Sports Council, Jammu, Ranjeet Kalra presented welcome address and highlighted the activities and achievements of Sports Council.
Later, the Deputy Chief Minister distributed prizes among the winners of different sports categories.
Lakhvinder of RS Pura claimed gold medal in 100 meters sprint.
The events were held in the disciplines of Boxing, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Wrestling and Athletics.
