PM meets Maldives President, Sushma discusses development cooperation with Solih

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the visiting Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih here on Monday. Both the leaders will participate at the delegation level talks.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also earlier called on the visiting Maldives President and both the leaders discussed issues related to development cooperation and human resource development. “Reinvigorating traditionally strong and friendly relations. EAM Sushma Swaraj called on President of Maldives Mr Solih. Warm and productive discussion on all aspects of bilateral ties, including development cooperation, human resource development & people-to-people exchanges,” MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar tweeted.
Earlier the visiting dignitary was given a ceremonious welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. This is President Solih’s first foreign visit after assuming office in November and also comes within a month of visit of Prime Minister Modi to the Maldives.
Mr Modi had visited Male during the swearing-in ceremony of new dispensation headed by Mr Solih after a keenly watched election. During his stay, the visiting dignitary will also hold talks on strategic importance with his Indian counterpart President Ram Nath Kovind.
Giving a hint on Maldives new dispensation’s clear preference to India in its diplomatic and bilateral ties, the new Foreign Minister of Maldives Abdulla Shahid visited India in November within a week of swearing in of the new regime in that country.
