PLS expresses concern over neglect of Punjabi language

JAMMU, June 25: Punjabi Lekhak Sabha (PLS), Jammu today organized its fortnightly literary meet at Tagore Academy, Rani Talab, Digiana, here.
Ajit Singh Mastana, a well known Punjabi writer of Kashmir presided over the function.
Dr Monojit Acting, President, PLS presented the welcome address.
A session of story reading by Dr Baljeet Raina, poetry by Piara Singh Dhanjal, Swamy Antar Nirav, Balwinderdeep Singh, Resham Kaur Resham, Dr Monojit and Ajit Singh Mastana were presented in the meeting.
Discussion on the items presented took place in which Didar Singh, Jang S Verman, Swamy Antar Nirav, Dr Monojit, Dr Baljit Raina and Ajit Singh Mastana expressed their views.
A detailed discussion on the non-implementation of Punjabi as compulsory language at high school level was held. The members present in the meeting expressed concern towards the order issued by Education Department and said that it is a setback to the expectations of the Punjabi speaking people of the State.
A resolution was also passed demanding the implementation of Punjabi as a compulsory subject in the schools at high school level.
The speakers further said that the Government has tried to create a wedge between different linguistic groups of J&K and diluted the concept of mother tongue by imposing three regional languages upon the people. It’s quite strange that the Government is trying to push Punjabi language to the corner, though Punjabi is spoken in more than 125 countries in the world, they added.
President PLS and the members urged the concerned agencies to rethink over the matter and impart justice to Punjabi and the lovers of Punjabi.
