People should have Right to Water: Hema

NEW DELHI, July 19:
India should not face a Cape- town like situation due to growing concrete jungles that are depleting ground water, BJP member Hema Malini today said, demanding that people should have the Right to Water.
People are facing problems in accessing clean drinking water in the country, she said during the Zero Hour.
She said increasing unplanned urbanisation and concrete jungles are leading to depletion of ground water.
Observing that states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are facing this problem, she said India should not face a Cape Town-like situation.
Cape Town has been facing a water crisis. Severe restrictions have been imposed from time to time on usage of water in the city. Showers were restricted to two minutes and watering of gardens was not allowed.
Quoting a Niti Aayog report, she said crores of people do not have access to clean drinking water and the situation was likely to worsen in the future.
She said the people should have Right to Water in addition to the Right to Education.
Right to Water is not enshrined as a fundamental right in the Indian Constitution but courts have interpreted Article 21- Right to Life – as encompassing the right to safe and sufficient water. (PTI)
