JAMMU, Dec 16: Perturbed over the death of a youth due to alleged torture by police, people today ransacked police post Gajansoo in city outskirts and also resorted to stone pelting due to which two police personnel received minor injuries.
According to reports, a 23-year-old youth identified as Rinku Kumar son of Shamsher, resident of Gajansoo, was arrested by Gajansoo police on December 13 when he was found with 67 pouches of liquor. However, he was released on bail yesterday evening but around 10 pm his condition deteriorated following which his family members shifted him to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where he expired in the wee hours of today.
Alleging that the youth died due to physical torture by the Gajansoo police, the family members, relatives and other villagers who were around 300 in number gathered in front of police post Gajansoo at around 5 in the morning and staged a protest demanding a magisterial inquiry into the death of the youth. Later, the gathering became violent and resorted to stone pelting and ransacking of the police post.
Angry mob also damaged around five two-wheelers, a car and a police van. They threw the motorbikes and a scooter into the nearby canal, which was later with the help of locals and police contingent taken out of the water. In stone pelting, two police personnel deployed in the police post received minor injuries.
The violent gathering pacified only after senior officers of police including SDPO Domana, Surinder Sharma, and local MLA, Choudhary Sukhnandan, reached the spot and assured them of conducting a magisterial inquiry and postmortem by a medical board to enquire into the reasons of the death of the youth.
When contacted, SDPO Domana, said that the deceased, who was a drug addict, was arrested in a bootlegging case on December 13 and was bailed out last evening. He said that the youth died due to some illness in the hospital. The officer said that a magisterial enquiry into the death of the youth has been ordered on the demand of his family members and kin to ascertain the cause of the death and after post mortem conducted by a board of doctors, the body of the deceased was handed over to his family members for last rites.
