People protest, block road after sacrilegious act in Sunderbani

JAMMU, Aug 6: The people held strong protest and blocked Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch highway for about three hours today after a sacrilegious act by some miscreants hurt religious sentiments of the members from one community, triggering communal tension at Sunderbani in district Rajouri.
Reports said that tension gripped the Sunderbani town after some people spotted a sacrilegious act allegedly committed by some anti-social elements on the outskirts of the town at around 8.30 am. The people found milch animal in serious condition with stab wounds and informed Veterinary team and Tehsildar Sunderbani. They provided treatment to the animal and after some time many people gathered there.
Later, they moved to the National Highway and raised barricades at around 10 am and started protest. They were demanding immediate arrest of the accused persons involved in the crime. They shouted slogans against police and local administration.
SDM Kartar Singh and SHO Sunderbani tried to pacify the protesting people but they continued their protest demonstration and sloganeering. Later, Additional SP Nowshera, Atul Sharma arrived with some force at Sunderbani and talked to the agitating people. He assured that those involved in this crime, hurting religious sentiments of one community will not be spared and arrested shortly. On his assurance the people lifted dharna from the road at around 1.20 pm.
A large number of vehicles which were stranded on both sides were the cleared. Long traffic jam was created and it took some time to the cops to clear the highway and restore normal traffic.
