SRINAGAR, Nov 10: Anguished at erratic power supply, people in Watergam area of Barmulla district in north Kashmir today locked down local receiving station to lodge their protest.
The locals of Watergam took to streets and blocked main road. They said for the past three weeks, the area has been witnessing unscheduled power cuts and this has affected their lives badly. The locals said that they from time to time urged officials of Power Development Department (PDD) to install meters in their area so that they are not subjected to unscheduled power cuts.
“However, the PDD is not interested in providing us uninterrupted supply. From past three weeks, we have been subjected to worst power cuts. They are not adhering to their own curtailment schedule and people are facing severe difficulties. The student community is worst sufferers,” said Dawood, a local of Watergam.
The protesters were shouting slogans against State Government as well as against the PDD. The protesters locked the local receiving station to lodge their protest. “The concerned officials only tell us that they have to supply power to other areas as well from this receiving station. This is ironical. They should first ensure power to locals and then supply to others,” the protesters added.
Later, a police party rushed to the area and assured protesters to convey their grievances to concerned authorities.
