PDP PAC directs Ministers to attend party offices

JAMMU, Dec 1: The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) today called upon the party Ministers, legislators and office bearers to regularly attend party offices in both Jammu and Kashmir divisions to address problems faced by the people. It also called upon the party leadership to gear up for Panchayat elections by forming party Committees in all Assembly constituencies.
Chaired by Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, the PAC met a day before re-election of Mehbooba as the PDP president for sixth consecutive term of three years.
“All arrangements for election of the PDP president were discussed and finalized at the PAC meeting, which lasted more than two hours tonight at official residence of Mehbooba Mufti,” party insiders told the Excelsior.
They said Mehbooba is all set to be re-elected as the PDP president tomorrow unanimously. The election is scheduled to be held at Mehbooba’s residence.
Party leaders said apart from discussing and finalizing the PDP president’s election formalities, the PAC, in which all party Ministers (both in the Cabinet rank and Ministers of State) had been invited for the first time, directed the party Ministers, legislators and office bearers to regularly visit PDP offices in Jammu and Srinagar to address issues raised by the people.
“The people in Kashmir valley face more problems during the months of winter, which should be resolved immediately,” the party Ministers were directed by the Chief Minister. She also directed the Ministers to attend Jammu office also regularly and redress the public grievances.
Sources said the Chief Minister and top PAC leaders directed the party cadre to gear up for the Panchayat elections by framing committees at Assembly segment level.
As Panchayat elections are round the corner, the PDP decided that more and more party cadre should be elected in the Panchayats even though the elections would be held on non-party basis.
According to party leaders, working of the PDP-BJP coalition Government also figured at the PAC meeting and majority of leaders expressed satisfaction over the coordination between the Alliance partners though some of them stressed for giving further pace to the developmental works.
The PAC members included Mehbooba Mufti, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Rafi Ahmad Mir, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, Qazi Afzal, Sartaj Madni, Dillawar Mir, Peer Mansoor Shah, Mehboob Iqbal and Ved Mahajan among others. Besides, all Ministers also attended the meeting.
As reported today, Mehbooba would address members of the Electoral College and other senior functionaries after her re-election as new president tomorrow.
This will be for the sixth time in a row since 2003 when Mehbooba Mufti will be re-elected as the PDP president.
After being floated in 1999, former Chief Minister and Mehbooba’s father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was elected as the first PDP president. However, after Mufti Sayeed became the Chief Minister heading PDP-Congress coalition Government in November 2002, Mehbooba took over command of the PDP in 2003 and continued as the party chief since then, playing major role in the State politics.
Mehbooba got the distinction of being first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir when she was sworn-in as head of the PDP-BJP coalition Government on April 4, 2016.
