JAMMU, Feb 26:  Lambasting the ‘Coalition’ regime for its failure to conduct Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) elections, former minister and senior Congress leader Raman Bhalla today said that depriving citizens of their democratic rights and eroding sanctity of democratic institutions are the only visible achievements of the two year tenure of this regime.
Addressing a  public meeting in Gandhinagar constituency here today, Bhalla accused Coalition Govt of callousness in providing basic facilities like drinking water,   electricity and   proper supply of ration. He referred to the hike in the prices of essential commodities and regretted that since formation of BJP led Government at the Centre prices of the essential commodities have been increasing with every passing day.
Bhalla took the Coalition regime to task for delaying ULBs elections which have already missed several deadlines. He said Government has been postponing these elections with one or other excuse.
“I have failed to understand why Government is shying away from its duty to conduct these elections. Formation of ULBs are must to empower the people of urban areas”, he said.
Congress leader said that the Centre has blocked grants worth crores for urban development in the State because the Government here failed to constitute duly elected local bodies.
Meanwhile, residents of Bajrala protested against the Rural Development Department (RDD) for its ‘failure’ in clearing liabilities of several crores in the works being done under MGNREGA. Protesters alleged that though the Union Government had released funds to the Government for clearing the MGNREGA liabilities, the department was deliberately not clearing the same.
The meeting was organised by  local Congress leader of Barjala,  Sudesh Kumar. Prominent among others present included Amrit Bali,  Block president Congress party, S. Avtar Singh (Shanty) chairman,  Meet Raj,  Lamberdar Barjala Sat Pal Bhagat, former Panch Bachano Devi,  Nanak Singh, Hans Raj, Bal Krishan,.
