JAMMU, Dec 26: The Civil Secretariat ‘Gherao’ program of casual and need based workers from Power Development Department (PDD) was foiled by police here today.
A large number of need based and casual workers of PDD assembled at Press Club in the morning around 11 am and started protest demonstration. They were shouting slogans in support of their demands and seeking release of their wages. They also raised slogans against the State authorities.
Under the leadership of Akhil Sharma, president PDD Needbase Casual Labourers Union, the members of the Union after holding protest demonstration for some time, moved towards Dogra Chowk and Gumat for their onward on-foot march to Civil Secretariat. But the strong contingent of police raised barricades and did not allow them to go ahead towards Indira Chowk and Secretariat. They showed some resistance but had to stay back.
Then the protesting employees sat on dharna on the road and some way laid there, disrupting movement of traffic for some time.
Akhil Sharma addressed the gathering and said that in Kashmir 7500 such workers were being paid wages regularly but in Jammu 3405 workers have been denied their hard earned wages. They and their families are left to face starvation. He said today is the 22nd of the strike but issue has not been resolved.
He demanded release of wages of these workers, regular release of wages from one Wage Head and implementation of SRO 381.
