Patrolling in Rajouri, Poonch villages after complaints of child lifting

SRINAGAR, Oct 3: Police have arrested some miscreants in connection with the terror and harassment caused by some ‘elements’ in the Rajouri and Poonch districts of the Jammu division during the past one month.
Replying to the Calling Attention Notice of Murtaza Khan in the Legislative Council here today, Minister of State (MoS) for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani said that beat-wise patrolling has been taken up in the villages of the Poonch district where complaints of child lifting have been reported. He said regular meetings with the Sarpanchs and respectable citizens of the area are being organized to dispel the rumours spread by the anti-social elements.
“Some local miscreants have also been arrested with FIR 199/2012 and 203/2012 being registered against these miscreants. These persons have been booked under Sections 458, 323 and 382 with respect to these FIRs lodged at the Surankote police station. Some suspected persons and released/surrendered militants/OGWs are also being called to all the police stations in Poonch district for questioning,” said Nasir.
He said that two children namely Shehrez Ahmad and Zahid Choudhary were recovered from Bus Stand, Jammu after they had gone missing from their respective homes. He said the boys told police that since they were beaten up their parents they decided to leave their homes. He added that three boys Akash Raina, Amir Khan and Imtiyaz Khan who had gone missing on September 18 were intercepted by a police naka at Kallar and handed over to the parents.
“On September 19 police was informed about the presence of a woman in the maize fields in village Dassal Karriyan and on verification it was found that the woman is mentally challenged. Some mischievous elements beat a mentally challenged head constable of police, Mohammad Yaqoob of DPL Rajouri. In this connection FIR number 138/2012 under sections 307/147/323 was registered at police station Thanamandi,” said Nasir.
The Minister said that police spotted one Azhar Mehmood resident of Khabian aged 13 years as he was not willing to go to school and had torn his shirt. He said that some of the persons floated a rumour that some masked men are hiding in the maize fields in Khabian village. He added that a Junior Engineer, Shaheen Ahmad, was caught by the locals as they suspected him to be a member of the child lifting gang.
“During the intervening night of September 20 and 21, police station Rajouri was informed about the presence of some masked men in the maize fields in the villages of Thandi Kassi and Pathan Mohra. Some VDC members opened fire in the air and police combed the whole area for two days but nothing was found,” said Nasir.
He said that two Army personnel were caught by locals at Kotli Gambhir Mughlan area suspecting them to be members of child lifting gang. He said the army personnel were taken into preventive custody and let off once they disclosed their identity. He said enquiries and ground verification have proved that all these incidents which created panic among people were mere hoax.
“All the police units have been briefed to remain extra vigilant, establish special nakas on all the exit routes; activate VDCs and hold meetings with Sarpanchs and Panchs to allay the fears and misgivings of the public. The people have been asked not to take the law in their hands and not to resort to any kind of violence,” said Nasir.
