JAMMU, Feb 16: Pakistan has refused to accept bodies of its three nationals, who had carried out fidayeen attack at Sunjuwan Military Station last Saturday in which six Army personnel and a civilian were killed while troops had eliminated all three fidayeens. Following Pakistan’s refusal to claim bodies of its nationals, police today buried the bodies of all three fidayeens with all religious formalities.

Official sources told the Excelsior that the Ministry of External Affairs had got in touch with Pakistan Embassy and asked them to claim dead bodies of all three Pakistani militants, who were killed in Sunjuwan Military Station attack, as it had been established that all three were Pakistani nationals. The MEA had given evidence to Pakistan in support of Indian claim that slain militants were Pakistanis.
Sources said there was pressure on Pakistan Government to accept bodies of its nationals but it refused as this would have exposed the neighbouring country that it was openly sponsoring terrorism in India by sending trained militants into Jammu and Kashmir for carrying out subversive activities.
Following Pakistan’s refusal to claim the bodies, police authorities performed burial of the fidayeens with all religious formalities. The bodies had been kept in the Military Hospital, Satwari pending Pakistan’s response, which was received last night by the MEA and subsequently conveyed to Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources said enough evidence had been given to Pakistan that the slain militants, who had attacked Sunjuwan Military Station last Saturday, were Pakistani nationals.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to take over the Sunjuwan Military Station attack case for              investigations from police in the next few days. The NIA team had reached here a day after the attack and has already joined investigations.
Meanwhile, top police officers of Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indian Air Force (IAF) and other agencies met today to devise strategy to jointly counter the fidayeen attacks in future.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Dr SD Singh Jamwal presided over the meeting.
Sources said the authorities decided to formulate “pro-active” and “aggressive approach” to ensure that the militants don’t manage to carry out the terror attacks anywhere including security installations and civilian areas. And if they succeed in carrying out the attack, the joint mechanism should be in place to immediately thwart the attack and minimize the casualties.
The meeting reviewed in detail the Sunjuwan Military Station attack and decided to overcome the drawbacks, if any, especially strengthening of naka system to observe and neutralize movement of the militants well in advance before they could succeed in carrying out the attack.
Meanwhile, a general alert was today sounded in border town of Samba after suspicious movement of the militants was observed in Katli area early today.
SSP Samba Anil Magotra told the Excelsior that joint teams of Army, police, CRPF and other agencies carried out the search operation in and around the area, where there were reports that movement of two suspected militants carrying arms and ammunition with them was reported.
The Army School Samba was closed down immediately after the reports. However, other educational institutions and Government offices continued to function. Traffic on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway was also normal.
“Searches continued throughout the day but no contact with the militants was established,” sources said but added that security agencies remained on high alert all along the border areas of Samba and the town to ensure that the militants, if any, are neutralized before they could strike.
Meanwhile, the three heavily-armed Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists who carried out the audacious attack on Sunjuwan military camp in Jammu had infiltrated into Kashmir from Pakistan in June last year, sources said.
According to preliminary investigation of the Army, the three terrorists were hiding in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir for the past seven months and were looking at carrying out an attack.
The JeM terrorists who carried out the attack had crossed over to India from Pakistan in June last year when infiltration had gone up, the sources said.
They said a detailed investigation is being carried into the Sunjuwan attack and the probe report will be examined by top echelon of the Army.
The sources said immediate steps are being taken to ensure that such attacks do not recur.
