Over 600 rural families attend HBET Annual Scholarship Distribution Function

JAMMU, Mar 17: Harbans Bhalla Educational Trust celebrated its 21th Annual Scholarship Distribution Function and ‘Preeti Bhoj’, here today.
Bali Bhagat, Minister for Health and Medical Education distributed the scholarships among the students and offered them words of encouragement and emphasized on the need to make the best use of the opportunity provided by Harbans Bhalla Educational Trust.
He called upon the credible NGOs/Trusts and other similar bodies to take lead in social activities and help in bringing societal reforms, which was the need of the hour. He said the society is passing through great juncture of several evils like female feticide, drug menace, dowry, domestic violence and other related issues which are harming the society and it is imperative on the part of all stakeholders to work in unison to eradicate these. He also stressed the need for greater efforts to change the mindset of the younger generation and work for strengthening and preserving the rich values and culture of Indian civilization.
Reporting on the activities of the Trust, the Managing Trustee, Kunil Bhalla informed that many HBET students are now contributing to society as successful professionals-Engineers, Teachers, Scholars, Architects and Nurses.
He also announced that students who desire to pursue Nursing can apply for scholarship of the Trust.
HBET was established in 1997, with the objective of supporting education of children, specially the girl child belonging to economically weak & disadvantaged section of Jammu province. Over the last 21 years 5300 scholarships have been awarded with financial outlay of Rs 1 crore 32 lakh.
80 percent of the students are girls from rural areas, who travelled from distant villages of Arnia, Akalpur, Birpur, Chadwal, Doomi, Dansal, Jourian, Kanachak, Korejagir, Kandyal, Sunderbani, Hiranagar and Surinsar to participate in the function along with their families.
Educational support to children is provided by HBET team through its grass root activities like mentorship Program, Summer Camps, Rewards Programs, Medical Assistance to the students & their families. Counseling sessions for children & parents are organized with the help of Jammu University Psychology Department.
The children gave vibrant and colorful performances in dances, songs and poems.
The function was followed by ‘Preeti Bhoj’ function, the traditional Dogri meal which was thoroughly enjoyed by more than 2500 people including children, their families and supporters of HBET.
