JAMMU, Jan 31: 2nd Additional Sessions Judge Jammu Pawan Dev Kotwal has awarded one year rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 2 lakh to a police cop Amarjit Singh for bigamy (the offence of marrying someone while already married to another person).
While deciding the case, the court observed, “trial is pending for more than 21 years as the complaint came to be filed on 26.12.1996 and therefore mitigating circumstances are in favour of the convict”, adding “conviction itself entails serious consequences and it is also true that the accused has reached the age of 59 years as stated by him and his father is dependent least physically on him”.
Accordingly, court awarded one year rigorous imprisonment to the convict and imposed fine of Rs 2 lakh. “The fine shall be recoverable from his estate and on deposit shall be paid to the complainant Jeet Kaur”, the court added.
