One-way traffic on Kashmir highway, up convoy to ply

SRINAGAR : Only one-way traffic will ply on the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
Vehicles will ply from Jammu to Srinagar, no vehicle will be allowed from Srinagar to Jammu, a traffic police official said.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers and essentials, particularly vegetables and oil tankers left Jammu this morning for Kashmir valley.
Traffic on the highway was disrupted yesterday following fresh landslides at several places. Traffic was resumed and all stranded Kashmir vehicles were allowed to move after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) cleared the landslides by putting into service sophisticated machines and men.
Later traffic, including vehicles stranded at Qazigund, were allowed to move towards Jammu in the afternoon.
The BRO is working to make the highway safe for two-way traffic, he said, adding that the road is still damaged and narrow at some places where only one-way vehicle could pass easily due to landslides.
Traffic on the highway, the only road linking valley with outside the world, was frequently disrupted since January 6 when first heavy snowfall was experienced after about six months dry spell.
This has resulted in shortage and increase of prices of essentials commodities, particularly fresh vegetables. (AGENCIES)
