SRINAGAR, June 10: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today paid glowing tributes to Late Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg and Late Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah on their death anniversary.
Highlighting their contributions in the State’s socio-political and development fields, Omar Abdullah described them stalwarts of political struggle and social justice. “They sacrificed a lot and tolerated the hardships to uphold the principles of democracy and people’s rights”, he added.
Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg was the close companion of Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and he fought the battle for people’s rights while Kh. Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah has the distinction of working both with Sheikh Sahib as General Secretary of National Conference and with Dr. Farooq Abdullah as a Senior Minister in his Cabinet.
He faced hardships and arrests with Sheikh Abdullah and other NC leaders during the people’s movement, Omar Abdullah added and said that Mr. Shah exhibited highest quality of remaining committed to party, its policies and its leadership throughout his life and during all challenges and testing times.
The Chief Minister said that the contribution of Late Afzal Beg in translating the vision of ‘Land to Tiller’ envisioned by Sheikh Abdullah into reality was remarkable, while the contributions of Kh. Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Shah as the head of the State Autonomy Committee and as General Secretary of National Conference were outstanding and glaring.
The Chief Minister said that National Conference has always been the party of great luminaries enjoying the trust and support of general masses. “Our endeavour should be to work towards achieving the goal of ‘Naya Kashmir’ in a missionary spirit where social justice and equitable development of all regions and sub-regions will rule the roost without any consideration of creed, caste, colour, region and religion”, he said calling for fortifying and nurturing the high principles of secularism and democracy in the State.
The Chief Minister prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and wished well-being and prosperity to the people of the State.
