NSD’s 20 day long Theatre Workshop begins

JAMMU, June 29: A Theatre workshop on Design and Techniques organized by National School of Drama, New Delhi in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art,Culture and Languages was today inaugurated at K.L Saigal Hall.
Padamshree Balwant Thakur, Regional Director ICCR,Jammu presided over the function and Prof. Lalit Magotra, convenor Dogri,Sahitya Akademi,New Delhi and eminent Dogri writer, scholar was the Chief Guest. Bapi Bose, Nationally renowned and celebrated Theatre Director and Camp Director of this workshop, Ashok Sagar Bhagat, Incharge Extension Programme Department, NSD,  Souti Chakraborty and Dr. Arvinder Singh Amn, Additional Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art,Culture and Languages were also present in the presidium.
Prof. Lalit Magotra, while speaking on the occasion appreciated the initiative to organize theatre workshop on design and techniques and said that this is for the first time that NSD has organized this type of workshop in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art,Culture and Languages for theatre artists of the State and Jammu region in particular has its vast history of theatre movement and Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art,Culture and Languages has contributed a lot for the development of modern Theatre of the region. He further said that the artists will get training in technical departments of the Theatre which includes stage designing, lights, sound, make-up and poster designing along with model making,evolution of performing space and production mounting. He also wished for the success of the workshop.
Balwant Thakur, while delivering his presidential address said that this is a rare opportunity for the theatre performers of the State in general and region in particular to learn and know more about the design and techniques being used in Theatre production. While speaking about the achievements of . Bapi Bose, he said that Mr. Bose studied in Institute of Indian Theatre Arts, Kolkata is a NSD passout and a multi-faceted figure in the field of modern Theatre. He said that his presence as camp director of the workshop is an added feather along with other nationally and Internationally acclaimed experts of their respective departments of designing and techniques of theatre like Mr. Souti Chakraborty, an expert in lights designing and evolution.
Mr. Bose, Camp Director of the workshop while speaking on the occasion detailed about the 20-day long workshop of Theatre design and techniques. He informed that as per the time schedule, the workshop will start from 8 A.M to 8 P.M daily and the practical demonstration alongwith theory of the respective subjects will be demonstrated and discussed with the participating students.
Earlier in his welcome address, Prof. Ashok Sagar Bhagat from NSD informed about the policy and schemes of the NSD, New Delhi and said that this extension programme of Theatre workshops in other parts of the country was started in 1979 with the proposal and initiative of M.K Raina, prominent theatre Director hailing from J&K with the mission that the interested artists who could not get admission in NSD can be provided an opportunity about the training of various departments of Theatre.
