North India’s first space centre in Jammu

Call it a historic proud moment for Jammu or remembering the legacy and paying tributes to the son of the soil Dr. Satish Dhawan, a space centre after the name of the great space scientist is going to be established in Central University Campus at Raya, Jammu. A space centre, in ordinary parlance, is a place dedicated to activities which are related to space which include research, manufacturing activities like making parts and spares for space vehicles, launch of space vehicles etc. Creating science museums, libraries, laboratories, debates and public education and seminars, policy formulations and the like are ancillary activities of a space centre.
There is no doubt, with this big leap towards advanced scientific study and research, our higher educational institutions definitely shall be vying with one another in making respective institutions hubs of scientific and advanced studies centres. After the great Dr. Vikram Sarabhai who left this world at an early age, his mission was carried forward by another great scientist Dr. Satish Dhawan who basically was from Jammu and later had settled in Bangalore. About him and his talent, Dr. Sarabhai is reported to have commented that he surpassed him in every respect except his age. It is a matter to be rued that so far, Jammuites could not celebrate the genius of the son of the soil and with the establishment of this Space Centre, the first one in North Region, the students are bound to be immensely benefitted to learn from renowned experts and scientists in subjects of advanced learning and giant organisations like ISRO and others shall have direct link with Satish Dhawan Space Centre at the Central University at Jammu.
Central University of Jammu signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), one with Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) for establishment of Satish Dhawan Centre for Space Sciences in the University campus itself and another with Centre for Space Instrument Organisation (CSIO). These MoUs were signed in presence of Union Minister of State in PMO with independent charge of North Eastern States and Department of Atomic Energy Dr. Jitendra Singh and other dignitaries. He termed the occasion as special since the brilliant brains of the world gathered together under one roof in the University at Jammu.
The need is to shun the conventional approach towards our educational institutions and have policies and vision with emphasis on more of advanced studies and research in respect of medicine, space, aeronautics and aviation, environment and ecology, agriculture, non conventional energy and the like. It is hoped that with this breakthrough as establishing a space centre in Jammu, new horizons and milestones shall be touched and passed and such centres can prove more beneficial for the betterment of mankind and help place India in the front row of the most advanced countries in science and technology. We have enough emerging talent in this state which can contribute a lot to advanced studies and research in newer fields and disciplines and in the process, get excelled and sharpened to share and shape more.
