No curfew in Kashmir, markets open in Srinagar after 78 days

SRINAGAR, Sept 25: Curfew was lifted from entire Kashmir today while restrictions continued in parts of Srinagar and markets opened for the first time since July 9 this afternoon giving a semblance of normalcy with shoppers thronging to markets in large numbers.
Markets in Srinagar, Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramulla and other districts re-opened after 78 days, this afternoon. Hundreds of people thronged markets as shops and other business establishments re-opened today.
Traffic jams were witnessed in Lal Chowk and adjacent areas of Srinagar while similar reports were received from other district headquarters where shops and business establishments opened this afternoon.
The markets also re-opened in old city in Srinagar as well. The peaceful protest was also taken out at Nowhatta. However, markets remained open.
Stone pelting incidents were reported from Safa Kadal, Lawapora, Sakdaffar, Kani Kadal, while the situation by and large remained peaceful. Security forces fired tear smoke to disperse the protesters.
At Palhallan in Baramulla district, protest march was taken out which was stopped by the security forces, resulting in clashes. Six persons were injured in these clashes.
According to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, the situation across the Valley remained normal and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the Valley. “However, miscreants attempted to create disturbances in Anantnag and Sopore. There was no curfew in any part of the Valley,” it said.
According to the statement, at Main Chowk, Sopore and KP Road in Anantnag, miscreants in their attempt to create disturbances, pelted stones on shopkeepers when they were opening their shops. “Police and security force deployments immediately reached the spots and chased away miscreants and normalized the situation”, it said.
The statement said that police, during past 24 hours arrested 39 more miscreants who were wanted in the offences of harassing shopkeepers, creating disruptions in traffic movement by stone pelting and by placing obstructions on roads and lanes and also found involved in damaging public/private property.
