JAMMU, Oct 21: Nirman Mazdoor Union (Jammu) organized a protest demonstration in front of the office of Labour Department at Dogra Hall here today in support of the pending issues of the Labour class.
The Union members were also protesting against the tyrannical attitude of Assistant Labour Commissioner-Jammu who allegedly assaulted and used unparliamentary language against Jeet Raj, president of the union on October 7. A large number of workers belonging to different locations of Jammu region gather in front of the office of Assistant Labour Commissioner, Jammu holding red flags, banners and placards in their hands and shouted slogans in favour of their demands.
While addressing the agitating workers, Om Parkash, general secretary, State CITU unit said that benefits of various schemes made by J&K Welfare Board constituted under Building & Other Construction Worker (RECS) Act,1996 are not actually reached to the genuine workers not even to those who are registered under the said Act. He said that the claims like scholarship of children, pension, accidental claims, housing loans, medical reimbursement, group insurance, maternity benefits to female workers are not being sanctioned and have been lying pending for years together.
The poor workers have been harassed on account of unnecessary formalities. He said that Ajit Raj who is the president of union representing the construction workers of Jammu region have been assaulted by Asstt Labour Commissioner when he put up some grievances of workers before him for redressal and he also used unparliamentary language that could not be tolerated. He urged upon the Government to take stringent action against ALC-Jammu failing which union along with workers would continue their agitation.
Sham Parsad Kesar, senior leader State CITU said that in spite of stay order by High Court, workers are being harassed for want of inaccessible formalities. He further added that a number of applications for registrations of workers are lying pending for years together. The Union have received a number of written complaints from poor workers alleging rampant corruption in the Labour Department. He urged the administration to make an impartial inquiry and to take appropriate action against the erring officials.
Raj Kumar, general secretary, Bhawan Nirman Kamgar Union, Kathua, Ajit Raj, Bawa Ram and Kailash Nayak also spoke on the occasion.
