LEH, Mar 28: The opening ceremony of the 20th Nawang Dorjey & Stobdan (NDS) T20 Memorial Cricket Tournament was held with much fun and frolic at NDS Sport Complex, here today.
The 39-days long tournament is being organized by Tip Top Sports & Culture Welfare Society.
Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) President Tsewang Thinles was chief guest on the occasion while Lower Leh Councillor P Wangdan Shunu was guest of honour during the opening ceremony.
The main purpose of organizing this tournament is to pay tribute to the three martyrs who attain martyrdom while participating in agitation to demand UT status which result in grant of Hill Council status to Ladakh.
This tournament also aimed to engage the youth towards positive activities and in the process nearly 600 youths are engaged in this grand event. As many as 36 teams including from Doda, Kashmir and Kargil participating in the tournament so this young minds are diverted to this sports extravaganza for 39 days so that not only young sport persons but also the young sport lovers are engage in this sports event.
Congratulating the organizer for organizing such tournament for the past 20 years to pay tribute to the martyrs LBA President Tsewang Thinles said if we fail to remember the Martyrs then in future no one will come forwards for the cause of society.
He appealed the youth to play sports to stay physically fit so that they can get recruited in Army and paramilitary etc and he announced Rs.1 lakh financial assistance from LBA for the Tip Top Society for the promotion of sports.
Earlier, President Tip Top Kunzang Namgyal presented welcome address.
On the occasion, 3 minutes silence was observed in respect of the Nawang Dorjey and Stobdan. The opening ceremony was held with grand musical show in which fixture of the tournament was also released in presence of the guests and team members.
The musical show presented by LSRC band Ibex Thriller made the opening ceremony more exciting. The slogan of the Tournament is ‘Avoid Filthy, Stay Healthy’.
