JAMMU, Feb 9: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has asked the J&K Government to take appropriate measures to stop illegal settlement of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas in various parts of Jammu province.
Chairing a high level meeting of senior party leaders, NCP State president, and former Minister Thakur Randhir Singh, said that it is a matter of probe that how foreigners like Rohingyas, Bangladeshis were settled in parts of Patta Bohri, Talab Tillo, Narwal, Bari Brahamana and Sidhra, and even managed water connections, electricity connections, ration cards, State subjects.
“Who have allowed them to be Assembly voters in Jammu West, Gandhi Nagar and Vijaypur”, he questioned and asked the State Government to take measures to “stop” their illegal settlement in Jammu and its outskirts.
Singh said as per Government figures, there are over 6,000 Rohingya refugees who are living in different areas of the Jammu city, a predominately Hindu majority area and are settled there for more than six years now. Over 1,200 Burmese refugee families comprising nearly 6,000 people are settled in some of the congested areas of Jammu city including Narwal. They are mostly doing odd-jobs and are rag-pickers and even do begging to eke out a living.
The former Minister said that it is a serious matter and the State NCP will take this matter to the highest level and appealed to all those organizations, social bodies, Chamber of Commerce who have opposed these illegal migrations to get together to fight against these illegal settlements.
Krishan Kumar Digra, NCP State vice president demanded the State Government to spell out a policy on “whether Rohingya and Bangladeshi muslims can stay in the State or not.” It is a very serious matter and the Government should find out how they have come to the State, as they could be a threat to the security of the State.
