Jammu, Nov 4: National Conference MLC Dr Shehnaz Ganai, today urged the Government to consider the demand for setting up of Degree College at Tehsil Headquarter Mandi.
In a statement, Dr Ganai said that Tehsil Mandi qualifies for Degree College and requested Education Minister to see the ground reality of Higher Education in Tehsil Mandi. “The Students have to cover a distance of 35-40 Kilometers to reach to the nearest degree college for higher education. The topography, difficult terrain, very poor road connectivity and non-availability of Degree Colleges even at Tehsil level is a matter of serious concern,” she added. She also toured Mandi and supported demand of the people.
Dr Ganai said that there are five Government Higher Secondary Schools in Mandi Tehsil, and the pass-outs from them are suffering badly. A large number of boys and girls have become dropouts, she said. Highlighting that the college education prepares students for various types of State and National Cadre jobs, she said. If the students are left out at 10+2 Level, they will miss chance to compete at State and National Level jobs, where vacancies in thousands are filled every year. Dr Ganai appealed to the Minister to relook and consider the demand of opening of Degree College at Tehsil Mandi.
“The Chief Minister and the Education Minister who are working on Development Agenda need to take progressive steps in Education sector”, the MLC said and appealed Chief Minister to consider the long pending demand of establishing the degree college at Mandi tehsil. “Education is a universally accepted fundamental right and opportunities of having education are necessary and important. The empowerment of communities can only happen with education and for women empowerment it becomes extremely important that the avenues of Higher Education are available at door steps,” she asserted.
