JAMMU, Jan 2: Democracy through adult suffrage in J&K is seven decades old with National Conference (NC) leading the way in 1947 when the Indian sub-continent was in the throes of partition.
This was stated by Dr Mustafa Kamaal, Additional General Secretary, National Conference while addressing a gathering at village Nai Basti, Batehra on the Jammu-Aknoor highway.
He further said that the first task of NC was to put a democratic set up in place and side by side provide the minimum basic needs to the four million impoverished population of the State.
NC had ensured decentralization of power to the doorstep of the people through District Development Boards and the Panchayats under the Panchayat Raj Act of 1976, he added.
He stated that unfortunately the present set up of BJP and PDP does not see beyond their own interest and are active only in their constituencies resulting in utter neglect of the State in general.
He assured the audience that NC will do whatever it can do to mitigate the problems of the people by knocking at the door of the Administration for redressal.
National Conference believes in selfless service of the people both when in power and out of power, he asserted.
Replying to their long standing demand of link roads, one culvet and shifting of a transformer from the present place, he said that all the issues will be taken up with the Government as soon as received in writing from them.
Talking about the demonetization step by PM Narendra Modi, Dr Kamaal said despite well established parliamentary democracy in the country, PM did not take the people into confidence.
Among others present were Dr Farooq Mughal, Sarpanch Shyam Lal, Panch Sukh Dev Singh, Numberdar Shri Niwas, Retd BSF SI Prem Nath Dogra and Kashmir Singh.
