NC Core Group reviews political situation, introspects defeat

JAMMU, May 4: The National Conference Core Group today started two-day meeting of its Core Group at party president and former Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah’s residence in Srinagar to discuss prevailing political situation in the State. This was first meeting of NC’s Core Group after return of Dr Abdullah after kidney treatment from abroad and formation of PDP-BJP coalition Government in the State two months back.
The Core Group would also introspect reasons behind NC’s defeat in the last Assembly elections in which the party was reduced to mere 15 seats, its lowest tally.
Some members of the Core Group expressed their views on political situation in Jammu and Kashmir and various other issues while other party leaders would speak tomorrow. Dr Abdullah and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is working president of the party, would address the Core Group tomorrow before conclusion of two days meeting.
Prominent Core Group members, who were attending the meeting, included NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Mian Altaf, Surjit Singh Slathia, Ajay Sadhotra, Mohammad Shafi Uri, Rashpal Singh, Mushtaq Bukhari and Nasir Aslam Wani among others.
Sources said the National Conference would introspect reasons behind the party’s defeat in Assembly elections and discuss steps required to rejuvenate and revive the party in all three regions of the State. While the NC faced rout in Ladakh region drawing a blank in the last year’s Assembly elections, its tally was reduced to 12 in Kashmir region and only three in Jammu region.
The party would also discuss the situation during over two months of PDP-BJP coalition Government headed by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
The decisions taken by the Government including release and detention of separatist Masrat Alam, new recruitment policy, financial position and various other issues would be taken up in the Core Group meeting. Dr Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, in their addresses, were likely to come up with party strategy to rejuvenate and revive the National Conference in all three regions of the State.
Meanwhile, a party handout said, the Core Group offered fateha and paid glorious tributes to NC stalwart and former general secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmed and said his sacrifices and services for the party would be remembered for ages to come and that his demise had created a void that would be hard to fill.
The Core Group also offered fateha and paid glorious tributes to veteran NC leader, former Minister and legislator Haji Abdul Gani Shah Veeri and said on Veeri’s demise the party had lost a faithful, pro-people and patriotic voice. The Core Group expressed solidarity with Veeri’s family especially his son, NC leader and MLC Dr Bashir Ahmed Veeri for the loss.
