Nawaz Sharif to leave for London next week

ISLAMABAD:  The former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to leave for London in the first week of December, informed sources revealed on Thursday.

It was added that the president of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will be accompanied with his daughter Maryam Nawaz, according to the Dunya News. Nawaz Sharif will pay visit to his ailing wife Kulsoom Nawaz who had undergone three successive chemotherapies.

Kulsoom is expected to have further tests in December for which her husband and daughter scheduled their visits in the initial weeks of the month.

Meanwhile, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has adjourned the hearing of petitions against Nawaz Sharif, owning a political party despite disqualification, for indefinite time as no one from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) attended the session.

Lahore High Court (LHC) has merged contempt of court petitions against ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz. The Accountability Court had adjourned the hearing of Al-Azizia Steel Mills, London flats and Flagship Investment references till December 4.

The ex-PM, daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Safdar reappeared in the court on last Tuesday.

The Sharif family’s lawyer Khawaja Harris told that Islamabad High Court had reserved its verdict on a plea seeking to merge all three National Accountability Bureau references.

Nawaz Sharif is nominated suspect in references regarding Avenfield properties, Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investment, while Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain (r) Safdar are nominated in reference regarding Avenfield properties alone.

The former PM was indicted by the accountability court in the court on November 8 in all three corruption references separately. However, Nawaz denied all the charges pleading not guilty, saying that the proceeding was initiated on political basis.

In late July, the Supreme Court (SC) sacked Sharif following an investigation into corruption allegations against his family, making him the 15th premier in Pakistan’s 70-year history to be ousted before completing a full term.

The allegations against the prime minister stemmed from the Panama Papers leak last year, which sparked media frenzy over the luxurious lifestyles and high-end London property portfolio owned by his family. (AGENCIES)
