JAMMU, Feb 28: To mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata (CV) Raman on February 28, 1928, National Science Day was celebrated with zeal and fervour.
On the occasion of National Science Day, Central University of Jammu organized a motivational and inspirational talk by the eminent speakers Prof Ashok Ganguly from IIT Delhi/Director INST Mohali and Prof YD Vanakar from Department of Chemistry, IIT Kanpur at its Temporary Academic Block, Sainik Colony. The theme of National Science Day celebration -2017 was “Science and Technology for specially abled persons”. Academic Coordinator of CUJ, Prof Lokesh Verma, Prof SK Khosa, Head Department of Nano and Material Sciences, Dr Pankaj Mehta, Asstt Prof of Environment Science Department and Akansha Sharma were also present on the occasion.
University of Jammu celebrated National Science Day as ‘Open Day’. Many students from various schools and colleges visited laboratories and museums of Science Departments where the state of the art equipment were exhibited and demonstrated to them by the faculty and scholars. The event was coordinated under the supervision of Prof. Satnam Kour, Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Rajni Dhingra, Dean Faculty of Sciences and Prof. Pankaj K. Srivastava, Head Department of Geology, University of Jammu. The students visited Biotechnology, Physics, Home Science, Chemistry, Wadia Museum, EVS, Botanical Garden, Botany, Zoology, Geology and Geography where they were provided interactive demonstration sessions.
Faculty of Sciences, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University celebrated National Science Day on the theme “Science and Technology for Specially Abled Persons”. Thirty differently abled students of Red Cross Home for Disabled, Jammu, students of Higher Secondary Schools Panthal and Sira Colony participated in the celebrations. Under the guidance of Dr Sanjeev Jain, Vice Chancellor, SMVDU, the Day was celebrated at the Matrika Auditorium, SMVD University. The chief guest of the inaugural session was Major General (Retd) SK Razdan, who presented the keynote address. The introductory address was presented by Prof VK Bhat, Dean Faculty of Sciences and Convener while Prof V Verma, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Co-Convener of the event presented the valedictory address. Dr Sharada M Potukuchi, Associate Prof, Department of Biotechnology and Organizing Secretary of the event presented the vote of thanks. The resource persons of technical sessions included Dr Manish Kumar Varshney, Orthopedic Surgeon, SMVDNSH, Kakryal, Geeta Mehta, Scientist (Retd), CSIR-IIIM, Jammu, Physiotherapist and a team of expert medical practitioners from various branches. On the occasion, a short cultural programme was also staged by the PG students.
Islamic University of Science and Technology celebrated the ‘National Science Day’ which was dedicated to late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for his pioneering contribution towards the differently abled persons. Speaking on the occasion, Vice Chancellor, IUST Prof Mushtaq A Siddiqi, highlighted the current global trends in science and technology. Dean Academic Affairs and Coordinating Chairman Prof Mushtaq A Qurishi, Prof Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Bhat, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, University of Kashmir, Riyaz Ahmad, Deputy Director JKTDC and Dr Arshid Pandit, Senior Scientist, Department of Human Genetics, SKIMS also expressed their views. The university also organised a special performance by specially abled students of the Zaiba Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education Bijbehara and a special cash prize was also announced for them. A parallel symposium was also conducted on “Scientific Contribution for Specially Abled Persons & Future Prospects” and prizes were also distributed among the best three paper presenters.
KC College of Education celebrated National Science Day to create the awareness about the benefits of Science to mankind and also to help to develop rational thinking and scientific temper in our young generation. To mark this day a theme based “Low Cost Teaching Aids” competition was organized in the college premises in which a good number of students participated. The theme of the event was “Environmental Pollution Control”. Dr Shamima Bano, Principal of the college advised the students to plant more and more trees and protect wild life.
The students of Amandeep College of Nursing also celebrated National Science Day today with full enthusiasm followed by a science fair at Jethuwal Campus of the College. Dr Ravi Mahajan, Head of Plastic Surgery Department, Amandeep Hospital and Dr Amandeep Kaur, MD, Amandeep Group were guest of honour. On the occasion, the students prepared various models and also gave presentation on “Scientific Temper” and “Methods of Science”. Apporva (BSc Nursing) won first prize for her Mechanical Heart Model, while Maninder, Harmeet and Ramandeep (GNM 1st Year) shared second prize for their model on “Model Village” and Tanya was awarded third prize for her model on “Lungs”. Narinder Kaur, Principal, Amandeep College of Nursing and Navneet Chadha, Administrator were also present among others on the event.
Chenab College of Education celebrated National Science Day. On the occasion, a poster making, debate and slogan writing competitions were organized on the theme “Science for sustainable future”. Arti Bougal Lecturer of Science organized the activities in collaboration with other staff members. Urvashi and Monika stood first and second respectively in slogan writing, while Neha and Meenakshi in poster making. While speaking, Kamaldeep Kour, Principal of Chenab College of Education threw light on the selected theme.
National Science Day was celebrated in Government College of Education, Canal Road. Principal, Dr Kaushal Samotra was the chief guest of the programme, which was organised by the students of the Department of Science under the supervision of Dr Jyoti Parihar and Prof Radhika Mahajan. The students showcased the importance, aims and relevance of this day and focussed on the theme ‘Science and Technology for specially abled persons’. A poster making competition was held, which was adjudged by Principal Dr Kaushal Smotra, Prof Anju Bala, Dean Academic Affairs and Prof Raj Singh. Roomani, Sonika and Reema secured first, second and third positions respectively.
Science Club of Government Degree College Ramnagar in collaboration with Department of Science and Technology, Udhampur organized a symposium to celebrate National Science Day. Principal of the college Prof Tara Nath was the chief guest on the occasion. In the inaugural address, Prof Kewal Kumar, Programme Coordinator explained the importance of the day. A documentary on the life of Dr CV Raman and other Indian scientist were shown to the students. Various activities were performed during the first session of the programme. In the second session, a symposium was organized in which about 13 students participated on the topic “Role of Chemistry and Physics in day to day life”. Arshdeep, Ishta and Simran bagged first prize of Rs 500, second prize of Rs 400 third cash prize Rs 300 respectively. Three consolation prizes of Rs 200 were bagged by Aditya Mahajan, Sonali Abrol and Nirmal. Prof Kewal Kumar, Prof Naresh Sharma and Prof Pankaj Sharma acted as judges. Dr Pankaj Sharma, Convener College IQAC, Coordinator DST, Udhampur, Sanjay Kharoo, Prof Brinder Singh, Prof Satish Kumar, Anil, Shashi and other staff members were also present on the occasion.
Government Degree College Thannamandi under the banner of its Science Club celebrated National Science Day. A large number of students along with faculty members participated in the event. The function was presided over by the Principal of the College Dr Shakeel Ahmad Raina. On the occasion, Prof Rizwan Khan from Department of Physics gave a talk through power point presentation on the life and works of Dr CV Raman. Among others present were Prof Shaji Khan and Prof Sankait Gupta.
National Science Day was celebrated by the PG Department of Geography in Government Degree College Kathua. The programme was inaugurated by Principal of the college, Prof (Dr) Nater Singh in presence of Prof Pawan Kumar, Head, Department of Geography, staff members and students of the PG Department of Geography. Prof Pawan informed about the importance of Science Day celebrations and its historical background. Prerna and Pooja, students of PG Geography Sem-II and Pankaj and Sakshi, students of PG Geography Sem-V deliberated in detail on the various aspects of the science, scientific aptitude and growth of science in India in the recent past. Principal of the college Dr Nater Singh also threw light on the scientific development in India and called upon the student and audience to develop scientific temper and aptitude. Dr Ramkrishan, Prof Rajesh Kumar, Dr Surinder Singh, Shamsher Singh, Sanjay, Jyoti Paul, Kamini Chib, Monika and Swati were among the other teachers who witnessed the celebrations.
National Science Day was celebrated with full scientific fervour in the premises of KV Sunjuwan. Two students of class-XI Geeta Omprabha and Anshupriya presented their speech on ‘Utility of Science and Technology in day-to-day life’. Some interesting and magical experiments were performed by the students of class-XI namely Siddhant and Harsh during morning assembly. An inter-house quiz competition was also organised, in which Tagore House emerged winner. Later, the students of class XI (Science stream) interacted with eminent scientists Dr S Chakrovarty and Dr Rahul of INST Mohali. They discussed the recent innovations in the field of Nano-technology and their applications.
An inter-house science quiz was organized in DPS Nagbani to commemorate National Science Day. The programme commenced with a speech given by Ridhima Goel, a student of 4th standard on Science Day. After a nail biting competition among the teams, Jehlum House was declared as the winner of the quiz. The programme included many science related activities which were conducted and explained by the science teachers. The winners were awarded merit certificated by the Principal of the school RK Verma.
