Narcotics to prop militancy

In the footsteps of Afghan Mujahedeen and Taliban, who are running the Afghan war through drug trafficking, the parts of Pulwama district in Kashmir have also brought a large portion of arable land under poppy cultivation. April and May is the season when poppy flowers blossom and the poppy crop from which narcotics are made is ready. We were told that in previous years the authorities have been destroying the crop when it begins to ripe. But this year, the authorities are not moving in under the pretext of disturbed conditions in the district. However, there are also reports that revenue and other state authorities are conning at the affair and are trying to shield the illegal cultivation of poppy.Drug trafficking has been going on in the State for quite some time and the authorities are fully aware of it. There is international drug trafficking network involved and the drugs are carried all the way to Pakistan and other countries. Since Pulwama is infested with seditionists, the people resorting to the cultivation of forbidden crop carry the impression that they can, through drug resource, sustain militancy in the area. There is good reason to believe that local authorities would soft paddle with the cultivation of contraband product. It is, therefore, desirable that the State Governmentdeploys the task force to destroy the entire crop and take the clandestine cultivators into custody and prosecute them under the law of the land.
