SRINAGAR, Nov 16: Surrounded by newly developed posh localities, residents of Nadir Gund locality of Hyderpora on the outskirts of Srinagar are lamenting the lack of drainage system and macadamized roads in the area, besides other civic amenities like street lights and dustbins.
To protest against the laidback attitude of administration, the residents of Nadir Gund Mohalla today blocked the Srinagar International Airport Road for hours at Peer Bagh area.
Residents complained that despite the area being close to Airport Road and surrounded by localities with all facilities, the area lacks basic amenities.
Meharaj-ud-din Bhat, a local resident, said that residents of Nadir Gund locality are living in “prehistoric times”, at least when it comes to drainage and roads. “Due to the poor drainage and improper roads we feel that we belong to some far-flung area,” Bhat said.
He said that new colonies surrounding Nadir Gund are being provided all facilities including proper drainage system, streetlights, macadamized lanes and dust bins.
“Even all drainage water from these colonies is ejected into our locality, why are we being ignored. We always sacrificed, yet we are being victimized,” he lamented. “Water logging is the major issue in the area. It creates flood like situations on the dilapidated roads,” another resident Abdul Majeed said.
He said that the problems have compelled some of the inhabitants to sell their inherited properties and move out to other localities, “since we have been ignored by successive Governments”.
The residents claimed that a 1.25 Km drainage project has been sanctioned under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) but there are no signs of implementation of the scheme on ground yet.
“As soon as the drainage will be completed we will mend the roads, although we could have had macadamized the road but that would have been of no worth since the SMC drainage work is not complete yet,” said an official.
