Municipality heads feel ignored; demand funds, facilities

SRINAGAR, Dec 23: The newly elected Chairmen and Presidents of Municipal Councils and Committees today alleged that Government has ignored them after the elections and funds as well as facilities required to carry developmental works in their wards are not available.
Addressing a press conference here, the elected members alleged that despite braving the brunt of extremely volatile situation in the Valley, they participated in the local body elections but are now facing problems in ensuring proper sanitation and development in their wards in absence of funds and facilities.
Chairman Anannag Municipal Council and J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) General Secretary Hilal Ahmad Shah said all the elected members are anguished over the chaotic situation in their wards in absence of funds and other facilities required for their development.
“We feel anguished over the chaotic situation prevailing in our Councils and Committees in absence of funds and other facilities, particularly in respect of sanitation, construction of lanes & drains, hygiene, shifting of garbage from interior and main roads, manpower etc and seek their resolution in the larger interests of common people,” Shah said.
He said that the Government must ensure all the facilities required for ensuring overall sanitation in the wards for which manpower, vehicles and other facilities need to be provided.
They alleged that the vehicles that were provided earlier to lift the garbage from main roads to dumping sites are either lying defunct or shifted to other places as a result the garbage remains on roads for weeks together thereby causing inconvenience to the people.
The elected members demanded that Government should provide salary as per population to every Municipal Council and Committees. Besides, salary and other facilities including accommodation, vehicles and security be provided to Presidents, Vice-Presidents and Councilors to ensure the safety of their lives and property.
They also demanded that funds to tune of Rs 2 crore be provided to every Councilor enabling them to do the job for which they have been chosen till the funds that are in pipeline are released to Municipal Councils/ Committees.
