Mir Behri residents protest over poor road connectivity

Srinagar, May 19: Scores of residents of Mir Behri area of Saidakadal today staged a protest against authorities for their failure to maintain road connectivity in their area.
The locals said the commuters are having a tough time as the only road that connects their area to the city was in shambles. “Our road from Kani Kachi to Moti Mohalla (Tourist Spot) is lying in shambles and people find it hard even to walk on this road. The devastating floods of 2014 have worsened the condition of the road,” they said.
The locals said in order to connect the interiors areas of Dal Lake, the Government in 2012 allotted four kilometers approach road from Rainawari to Moti Mohalla. With a project cost of nearly Rs 140 lakh, the road was supposed to be completed in one year but was left mid-way, they said.
“This is the only road, which enables us access to necessities: our food comes through it, children go to school by it and we get health care through it. By not providing us road connectivity, the Government is denying us the basic amenities of life as guaranteed by the Constitution,” Sajad Ahmad, a resident of Mir Behri, said.
The locals said after repeated protests the Government started the repair work on a road from Choudary Bagh to Moti Mohalla Rainawari and it was made motorable up to Kani Kachi but the dilapidated bridge stalled the whole construction process. “The minor repair works which were carried in last year have also been washed away by floods,” a local said.
The protesters threatened to intensify protest if their demands are not met.
