Militant killed in Shopian, searches on

SRINAGAR, Dec 18: A militant was believed to have been killed in a fierce encounter that raged in South Kashmir district of Shopian while security forces intensified the cordon around the village to prevent militants from fleeing.
A joint team of  44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army and SOG of Jammu and Kashmir Police this evening launched a cordon-and- search operation at village Batmuran following specific inputs about the presence of two militants. Sources said that they had information about presence of Tanvir Ahmad Bhat of Batmuran and a foreigner hiding in the village.
As security forces launched the searches, they were fired upon by the hiding militants, leading to a fierce encounter. The firing has stopped but the security forces have strengthened the cordon around the village so that the militants may not flee. One of the militants is, however, believed to be dead and search for the other is going on.
In the meantime, security forces today launched a cordon and search-operation in several villages of Shopian district in South Kashmir.
The searches were launched in Chatripora, Vehil, Nowgam, Panduchan, Kapran, Rey Kapran, Dangam and Wangam villages by a joint team of Army’s 62 RR, 34 RR, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police.
The operation was launched after inputs about the presence of militants in the area. However, the militants were not traced and search operation was called off.
In the meantime, police today busted a militant hideout in Chandergair village of Hajin in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
A search operation was launched by a joint team of security forces at around 10:30 pm last night.
The operation was launched on the disclosure of a youth, Rayees Ahmad Baba, a resident of Bon-Mohalla Asham, who was arrested from Shopian by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of police.
During the search operation, security forces recovered arms and ammunition from the           cowshed of Abdul Rehman Parrey son of Muhammad Anwar Parrey, a resident of Chandergeer Hajin.
Six militants including the nephew of Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi and an IAF GARUD commando were killed in a gunfight that erupted in the same house last month.
