MGNREGA employees hold protest, demand regularization of services

JAMMU, July 24: All J&K MGNREGA Employees Association held a protest in support of their demands at Press Club, here today.
A large number of MGNREGA employees under the banner of All J&K MGNREGA Employees Association assembled at near Press Club and started raising slogans in support of their demands, which included enhancement of their basic salary and their absorption in Rural Development Department & Panchayati Raj.
The protesting employees, which included Program Officers, MIS Operators, Technical Assistants, Gram Rozgar Sahayaks and Accounts Assistants, also tried to take out a rally from Press Club but the heavy deployment of police thwarted their attempt. Addressing the protesting employees, Sandeep Kalotra, provincial president of the association, said while the deadlock on negotiation between the Government and the protesting employees continued, their peaceful protest across the State entered 16th consecutive day.
He said their strike will continue in all the districts of the State till the demands of the association like framing of job policy, 10 percent hike in the remuneration of contractual staff, focus on employment of women, grant of ex-gratia up to Rs five lakh to MGNREGA employee and contractual staff in the event of death during execution of work, Rs two lakh in the event of permanent disability and Rs 50,000 in case of partial disability, etc are not fulfilled.
Kalotra said that they requested many times to the Government to fulfill their genuine demands but no favorable step was taken so far by the Government. We have been holding such protests/strike for many years to seek regularization of their jobs but the State Government was not ready to pay heed to their demands.
He appealed all MGNREGA employees of the State to get united for a decisive struggle.
