MeT forecasts rains, snow for weekend

SRINAGAR, Dec 7: The Meteorological Department today forecast snow and rains for this weekend that will mark the end of long dry spell in Kashmir.
“There are chances of moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir on the intervening night of December 10 and 11 while we also expect a spell of rainfall in the plain areas of the Valley”, a MET official said.
He said that the moderate snowfall is expected to continue in some areas in the higher reaches of the Valley like Zojila and Gurez on December 12 as well.
He said that there is possibility of light to moderate snowfall in areas like Zojila, Gurez and other higher reaches on December 11 and 12 which would affect the visibility in these areas as well as make the roads slippery.
The forecast of snowfall and rains is good news for people as dry weather has resulted in increase in common ailments like cough and cold among the people here.
The fog at Srinagar airport today disrupted flights and only one flight operated this morning while other fights were cancelled due to poor visibility caused by fog.
In the meantime, the night temperature across Kashmir, except Gulmarg, continued to hover below the freezing point.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.6 degree Celsius compared to the previous night’s minus of 2.2 degree Celsius.
Kupwara, in North Kashmir, was the coldest recorded place in the Valley as the mercury settled at the low of minus 3.3 degree Celsius.
Pahalgam in South Kashmir recorded a low of minus 3.0 degree Celsius against yesterday’s minus 3.2 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg in North Kashmir was the only place where night temperature was recorded above freezing point at 2.2 degree Celsius.
Qazigund town in South Kashmir registered minus 2.2 degree Celsius while the nearby Kokernag town recorded the low of minus 0.2 degree Celsius.
Leh was the coldest recorded place in the State recording the low of minus 8.3 degree Celsius while nearby Kargil town registered the minimum of minus 6.4 degree Celsius.
Srinagar recorded maximum day temperature of 11.9 degree Celsius while normal day temperature for this time of the year is 11degree Celsius, Qazigund recorded 13.3 degree Celsius, Pahalgam 13.8 degree Celsius, Kupwara 13.6 degree Celsius, Kokernag 12.9  degree Celsius, Gulmarg degree Celsius 12.5 , Leh 11.3 degree Celsius and Kargil 8.3 degree Celsius.
